Bristol toddlers to dress as buildings and creatures in new sculpture
course
Preschool children are in for a treat later
this month. A new Bristol company – Let's Make Art – is offering a short
course for toddlers focusing on sculpture, thought to be the first of its kind
in the city.
The course teaches the basics of sculpture,
using various materials to make wearable works of art, elaborate constructions,
pliable creations and giant cardboard cities. To introduce sculpture in a
familiar way, each session will include a well-loved children’s book or artist.
Inspired by the art and exhibitions created by the Japanese couple who started
Tupera Tupera, children are invited to get creative alongside their parents or
guardians, allowing imaginations to run free - the wilder the better!
Run by two artist / teachers, Karen Davies
and Alice Hendy, Let's Make Art was launched in 2012 to provide high quality,
well-resourced art sessions for children aged 2 - 11 + years.
Karen explains:
"As parents we understand that it can
be a struggle to think of new ideas for creative play and the mess created can
be daunting. Let's Make Art gives children the opportunity to discover and
create high quality artwork. They also get to spend time with their
parent/guardian, learning important communication and relationship skills in a
safe environment."
Alice agrees:
"We believe art strengthens all
aspects of learning: by encouraging your child's creativity, success in other
areas of their life will follow. The classes we provide introduce and develop
the concepts of colour, texture, composition and technique. As well as
developing fine motor and problem-solving skills, your children will get messy
and have fun with a wide variety of art materials, proudly taking home plenty
of masterpieces to show friends and family."
Four ninety-minute sessions are offer on
Friday mornings in Bedminster, beginning 22 February 2013. The month's course
can be booked for £25, which includes all materials and refreshments for
children and parents/guardians. One-off sessions cost £6 - some of the
activities have been planned for completion across four weeks, but there will
be plenty of activities that stand alone as well.
The course begins on Friday 22 February
2013, 10am-11.30am, at Bedminster Methodist Church, British Road, Bedminster,
Bristol.
